Dear Robin,
This year was my 5th Christmas cookie exchange. It is so much fun to
see how excited my friends are about having a child free afternoon to relax.
There are no exceptions for children because I pull out all my china and
favorite glassware that is usually put away. I usually start cooking about
a week ahead of time so all the ladies have to do is eat, relax and enjoy
some adult conversation.
I have everyone let me know their recipes in advance so we don't have
duplicates and I can have a small book of all the recipes put together for
them. The fun really starts there because I get RSVP calls almost immediately
for people wanting to make some of the more popular recipes.
I have many stand by books for when someone's recipe has already been
chosen. I also ask each of the ladies to bring 6 dozen cookies and have a
creative presentation. Then before we exchange we explain our cookie and
why we chose it and the group votes on the most creative display. I have
some cute prizes that are fun and holiday themed.
My biggest challenge is each year I have a different craft for everyone
to do. I make it simple enough so that nobody can tell me that aren't "crafty"
and won't do it. This year we made wine glass charms. I provided the beads,
charms and wires and everyone had a wonderful time.
Everyone is looking forward to next year and I hope to continue for
many years to come. Thanks for all the inspiration.
Happy Baking,
